Alex, I'll take Haunting Questions for $1000.

I was so overheated tonight at work
that I actually thought I might faint.
After a full day of sun beating down on it,
our building was hotter than the hinges of hell,
and every moment I spent in my coffin of an office
seemed to last for five hundred years.

Right before I left for the night, I went out back
to check the walkways and lock the rear door.
Standing in the darkness, wishing for a breeze,
I could hear somebody running in the alley.
Whoever it was stopped for a second and then
yelled out very loudly, "Hey, hey - I just gotta know -
what's a man gotta do to get some tenderness in this world?"

You shoulda yelled back, "Ya gotta give some first!"

Okay, bad idea. A guy yelling anything in a back alley at night is looking for an argument and/or a fight.

I think you alley guy has aggressive-aggressive tendencies.

you are much too kind.

And fossilgut - are ya tryin' to get me killed?

'Little brown twigs in neon floss ignore the crosswalks, darting between cars
in schools of five or six, while pillowy mothers bunch together at the light,
spilling out of their tank tops as they wait for permission to walk.'

Amazing huh. So very true except over here even the 'brown' twigs are a bit dry and yellow looking.

'every moment I spent in my coffin of an office
seemed to last for five hundred years.'

And as for this, eugh! And why is it that on leaving, everything seems to speed up dramatically? It's almost as if work places are actually some kind of Harry-Potter-esque, time turners. Imagine that, makes me feel somewhat dizzy!

Take care,

Jack

That's the million dollar question, is it not?

Thanks Brown Shoes - as always when I read what you write, I am taken to where you lead.

You're inspiring me to write some, I need to slow down and do so...

I've nipped back and read this a few times. It is beautiful, and reminds me of one of those very old black and white movies where the man who's fallen on hard times, served time on the chain gang, appears from out of the darkness, shabby and dirty, to see his woman now happily married to another man, and retreats back into the darkness for ever.

Was that a Vancouver-Seattle "overnighter"?
Wanna know more... does it come North the same way?

Very often I catch the passage of one gliding by, 8PM-ish
